Physical Education
PE at Lytham C of E
At Lytham CE, we believe that Physical Education is a vital part of our children's development. We are committed to providing a broad and engaging PE curriculum that encourages children to lead active, healthy lifestyles while developing key skills such as teamwork, resilience, and perseverance. Through a wide variety of sports and physical activities, we aim to inspire confidence and a love for movement, while also fostering a strong sense of fair play and respect. Our focus on physical fitness not only supports children’s physical health but also contributes to their emotional and social well-being, helping them to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
In addition to our regular PE lessons, we offer a wide range of exciting extracurricular activities to help children further develop their skills and interests. Alongside the opportunity to showcase their talents at the annual dance festival in 2024 and compete in the upcoming dance competition in February 2025, students can also participate in a variety of sports clubs. These include dodgeball, multisports, cricket, football, netball, and much more. These activities provide valuable experiences in teamwork, competition, and personal growth, allowing children to explore different sports and discover new passions while building confidence and social skills.
In January 2025, we introduced a new PE display board in the school hall, designed to celebrate and promote sports within our school community. The display not only highlights the sporting achievements of our students but also aims to inspire a love for physical activity. It serves as a reminder of the dedication, teamwork, and success demonstrated by our pupils in a variety of sporting activities throughout the year.
What scheme of learning do we use to teach PE?
We use PE Passport at Lytham CE as our scheme of learning because it provides a structured approach to delivering high-quality physical education across the school. It ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum, enabling us to deliver all required physical skills and activities in a systematic and progressive way. The scheme supports progression by building on prior learning, allowing children to develop their physical competence, understanding, and confidence over time. With clear learning outcomes for each year group, it allows for skills development in a range of activities, from games and gymnastics to dance and athletics. PE Passport also includes assessment tools, helping us track individual progress and identify areas for improvement. This ensures that all children are challenged appropriately and receive a well-rounded physical education, regardless of their starting point. PE Passport supports our goal of providing a high-quality, inclusive PE curriculum for all students.
Fundamental Movement Skills
Throughout the EYFS and KS1, children develop their fundamental movement skills (FMS), building confidence and competence as they grow. They engage in a wide variety of activities designed to enhance their agility, balance, and coordination. At Lytham CE, we aim for all children to master basic movements by the end of KS1, laying the foundation for more sport-specific skills in KS2. If necessary, FMS development will continue into Year 3 to support children’s physical growth and ensure they are as prepared as possible.
Please take a look at the 'Fundamental Movement Skills in KS1' document below. It provides ideas for practising these skills at home and outlines the sports children will be able to explore as they progress into Key Stage 2.
Dance and Gymnastics
At Lytham CE, children are taught dance and gymnastics throughout their time at school. They focus on developing flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance through a variety of gymnastic activities. Dance lessons are often linked to the key themes in our curriculum, helping students explore how their bodies can move in response to music and enhancing their understanding of rhythm and expression.
Invasion Games
Throughout KS2, children build on their skills, applying them to a wide range of sports. These include invasion games such as netball, hockey, football, and basketball; striking and fielding games like rounders and cricket; and net and wall games including tennis and badminton. As they participate in competitive games, they are encouraged to think strategically, using their skills, tactics, and teamwork to outsmart the opposition. They also explore key concepts of attacking and defending. To support their development, these games are adapted to give children the chance to practice, reinforce, and consolidate the skills they’ve learned.
Swimming
Swimming is a vital life skill that is developed throughout Year 4 and Year 5. Our lessons focus on building foundational skills and allowing children to practice and perfect their stroke technique, helping them swim with confidence and efficiency. We also deliver a comprehensive water safety programme that raises awareness and prepares children to handle a range of real-life water situations. By the end of KS2, we expect all children to be able to swim 25 metres with confidence and have a strong understanding of water safety. At Lytham CE, Year 6 children who have not yet achieved these outcomes will have the opportunity to continue swimming in the Autumn term to ensure they are fully prepared.
Wyre and Fylde Partnership (SSP)
We are proud to be a member of the Wyre and Fylde School Sport Partnership (SSP), which organises inter-school competitions and connects us with a wide range of extracurricular opportunities for our children. We actively participate in all SSP competitions and consistently achieve great success!
