Art and Design

Art and Design at Lytham Church of England Primary School

Our goal for Art and Design is to foster a love of art in our children to promote positive wellbeing. We aim to equip our children with cultural capital through an intellectually challenging & creatively demanding curriculum. Authentic engagement with a diverse range of artists, will encourage our children to be resilient young artists who employ our three ‘Big Ideas’ to create amazing art:

  • Inspiration: As an artist, I am inspired by the lives and work of other artists and use this knowledge to inspire my own work.

  • Exploration: As an artist, I love to explore what effects I can achieve using a range of different techniques and media, using resilience to build my skill set.

  • Expression: As an artist, I express what I think and feel about art and express my creativity, knowledge and skills through my works of art

As the pupils progress, we build up thinking skills with which we can think critically about art and how art can reflect our country, culture and history.

All pupils will produce creative work and become increasingly proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other artistic techniques. We can evaluate and analyse creative works and build up a language of art. We explore the work of great artists, crafts people and designers, form opinions, and discuss their work critically. By developing their own thoughts, ideas and eyes, we aim to help our children engage in the visual beauty of the world around them and recognise their own abilities to contribute to their environment too.

EYFS & SEND

Our Art Curriculum promotes open-ended creative learning, placing emphasis on the creative journey and nurturing children to become confidence and independent creators.

Within each area, we provide activities, which enable an open-ended, playful exploration of materials, processes, and ideas, which in turn nurture dexterity skills, promote an early understanding of visual literacy skills, and begin to build the child’s confidence in their ability to make a personal, creative response to stimuli.

Together, these opportunities provide a foundation for pupils to develop skills further through KS1 and KS2,

KS1

Pupils use a range of materials to draw, paint and sculpt from experiences and imagination. KS1 pupils explore techniques using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space especially through looking at a range of artists and craft makers. Experimentation is key to our curriculum. KS1 children will also explore drawing skills within a sketchbook.

KS2

KS2 pupils develop techniques with more control and a wider awareness of art and design. Pupils still experiment and investigate through the use of a sketchbook and observations to help review their ideas. They improve their mastery of techniques with a range of materials to explore drawing, painting and sculpture. KS2 pupils continue to interact with the work of artists and designers as well as architects.

Progression

Our art and design curriculum is designed to ensure a clear progression of learning throughout the primary phase. Learners will build upon their foundational skills and knowledge, developing increasingly sophisticated techniques and critical analysis abilities. This sequential approach will enable our learners to become confident, competent, and creative artists, well-prepared to continue their artistic journey in secondary education and beyond.

Wider Impact

The Art and Design curriculum at Lytham C of E Primary School is not only a means of developing technical proficiency, but also a powerful tool for fostering holistic student development. Through the creative process, our learners will cultivate valuable skills such as resilience, problem-solving, and self-expression, which will serve them well in all areas of their lives. Moreover, the exploration of diverse artistic traditions will deepen our learners’ understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural tapestry of our country.
